At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1997, the new Audi A6 was presented, based on a redesigned car platform - the Volkswagen Group C5 platform with a choice of new engines. The quality of the new Audi A6 was improved and it was marketed in the same categories as the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-class. The rebuilt body had a modern shape - the rear of the body was made in a "fastback" style, which was carried over to the following Audi models. The "fastback" style gave the relatively large sedan an aerodynamic shell. In 2000 and 2001, the Audi A6 (C5) was in the top 10 in "Car and Driver" magazine. This A6 was available with many engines and configurations. As an alternative to the manual transmission, a five-speed tiptronic automatic transmission was also also available.
